Dr. Karczmar, a native of Warsaw, Poland, has been a Rhode Island resident for more than 25 years. He and his wife, Dr. Cathy Lund (owner of City Kitty Veterinary Care for Cats), and their three cats live in Providence’s historic Elmwood district where they are both active in many community-based organizations including the Institute for the Study and Practice of Non-Violence, Providence Community Library, AIDS Care Ocean State, the Companion Animal Foundation, and City Arts.
Dr. Karczmar is one of the founding members of Taming Asthma, a non-profit organization that provides free asthma diagnosis, education and treatment for patients without medical insurance. For his work creating this organization, he was the recipient of the 2011 CHEST Foundation Humanitarian Award by the American Academy of Chest Physicians and also was recognized as a Blue Cross/Blue Shield of RI as a Community Hero.
In his spare time, Dr. Karczmar loves to read, travel, argue about RI politics (who doesn’t!), and sail his 45 year-old wooden ketch, Snow Goose.
