Biography

Dr Robert Carnevale was born and educated in Providence RI educated at Classical High and Providence College and graduating with honors in 1972.  He went on to study Medicine at the New York Medical College in Manhattan and Valhalla  and came back to Rhode Island for Internal Medicine residency and Cardiology fellowship  at the Rhode Island Hospital in 1975.

From the earliest stages of his exposure to medicine he has had a passion for direct patient care. He was involved  in the earliest stages of his career in medicine  in direct patient care with the creation of a community health centers  at the Ossining Open Door (www.opendoormedical.org) and later working in the community health centers  in Esmond (www.tri-town.org) and East Providence (www.ebcap.org). At the same time he developed an interest using ultrasound to better understand anatomy and physiology and apply the information to the care of patients with heart problems. This started with study the existing use of cardiac ultrasound in the Bronx, Rhode Island Hospital and during multiple trips to Indiana University school of medicine and developing innovative use of  ultrasound in a private office working with innovators in Horten, Norway and Milwaukee, WI. (www.gehealthcare.com/euen/cardiology/index.html)

In 1980 along with Joanne Carnevale RN RDCS and Cheryl McVay, he started a medical practice in the Elmhurst section of Providence. The practice was unique in that it devoted half time to primary care and half time cardiology.  At the same time affiliating with the medical school at Brown University as a clinical associate professor of medicine with a role of  educating  medical students, sonographers , residents and fellows in training. Direct patient care continued not only for  private patients but also working with the Rhode Island Free Clinic Network (www.rifreeclinic.org).

The practice has incorporated the expanding use of diagnostic ultrasound in the management of patients starting while still in the uterus to patients who were in the advanced stages of life.  Working at the Lifespan hospitals, Woman and Infants Hospital and the St Joseph Hospital (www.chartercare.org), he taught a generation of physician the expanding uses of ultrasound to treat heart disorders and understanding the workings of the heart in non cardiac disease.

In 1995 together with friends and colleagues who had also started neighborhood   practices in internal medicine and its subspecialties, he was involved with the creation of a new concept in care that was considered a group practice  but without walls.  The medical practice was called Coastal Medical Inc which soon also led to the formation of   a sister, more business oriented,  Coastal Care Medical Management  LLC where Dr Carnevale served for many years as a founder, treasurer, chairman of finance committee and later medical director. He was joined by Wendy Spellun  RNP in 1992  and later by  Joseph S. Terlato MD FACC,  MD, Lynn Ricks RNP,  Leslie Kenny RNP and recently Dana Mars RNP. Today he remains a teacher of those who wish to learn, an impassioned caregiver to patients both who are looking for primary care and those who have particular concerns  regarding their hearts as well as an active innovator in the direct care of patients and clinical use of cardiac ultrasound.   In 2010  the practice  at  Elmhurst was designated as NCQA (www.ncqa.org)  patient centered medical home and  for the fifth  time became a  nationally recognized cardiac testing facility by  ICAEL (www.icael.org/echo) as it continues to pursue the vision first created in 1980.
