Coastal Medical Pharmacy Team Receives Honor of 5-Year Accreditation

Providence, RI -- November 14, 2014

The Coastal Medical Pharmacy Program has received the rare honor 5-year accreditation from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, (ASHP).

As a general rule, the ASHP provides pharmacy programs with a 3-year accreditation. The Coastal Medical Pharmacy Program, developed through a partnership with the URI College of Pharmacy, and lead by Director of Pharmacy, Sarah Thompson, PharmD, was selected to receive 5-year accreditation due to the vision and value the team delivers, not only to patients via improved care programs, but also in the education of residency students.

“I am honored that we received this rarely awarded 5-year accreditation,” said Thompson, “We have worked extremely hard to restructure our program into a comprehensive experience that has its roots centered in providing the best clinical care for patients, and the best educational experience for residents. When residents leave our program, they have been part of a team that is developing ground-breaking systems to manage population health. At the same time, they work one-on-one with patients and truly make a difference in their care. We offer a very well rounded pharmacy experience that is uncommon in the industry. I feel the 5-year accreditation reflects our commitment to patients and pharmacy residents.”

Coastal Medical pharmacy residents have the opportunity to gain skill providing direct patient care in several of Coastal’s Patient Centered Medical Home primary care offices. They have exposure to an accountable care organization (ACO) view of managing pharmacy through the lens of population health management. This means residents are involved in new program development, for instance working with Coastal’s Adverse Drug Event Reporting System, or meeting with payors for discussions about the business and cost of pharmacy in healthcare. Coastal pharmacy residents have the opportunity to learn the new business of healthcare from an organization that is successfully improving quality and patient experience of care, as well as reducing the overall cost of care.

Coastal Medical is Rhode Island’s first Medicare Shared Savings ACO as well as the state’s largest physician owned and physician governed primary care group practice. Coastal provides predominantly primary care, along with some specialty services, to 120,000 patients in 20 medical offices state-wide. Coastal also own a full service laboratory, an imaging center and a medical billing company that provides services to physician practices and hospital owned medical practices across the country.
